Poro Municipality is in Camotes Islands in the province of Cebu, Philippines. Camotes is one of the favorite travel attractions among locals and foreigners alike.
Most travelers to Camotes Island would not miss visiting Poro Municipality since it has various attractions including its famous Poro Rock or Buho Rock – a former resort but is now transformed into an attraction site.
By the 2015 census, it is a population of 25,212. In the 2016 roll, it had 13, 790 registered voters, which indicates that over half of the total population can vote.
Poro, along with the Municipality of Tudela, is positioned on Poro Island of the Camotes Islands.
The feast of Poro is celebrated in honor of the Santo Niño de Cebu, on the third Friday of January.
Poro is composed of 17 barangays which are under its jurisdiction regarding political authority and administrative matters. Here they are:
Adela, Altavista, Cagcagan, Cansabusab, Daan Paz, Eastern Poblacion, Esperanza, Libertad, Mabini, Mercedes, Pagsa, Paz, Rizal, San Jose, Santa Rita, Teguis, and Western Poblacion.
Aside from Cebuano, Waray, Tagalog, and English, the local Porohanon language is also spoken by the townsfolk.
Also called Camotes Visayan, the language is mutually intelligible with other Visayan languages (e.g. Cebuano) spoken in the relaxation of the Camotes Islands, Cebu, other elements of the Visayas, and Northern Mindanao.
Town's title comes from the Waray-Waray phrase puro meaning "island." This Camotes Island is called Leyteños and by Warays. Before the municipality to be proven in Camotes, puro intended the name of all the islands.
Porohanon is distinguished from the means by which the locals substitute /j/ sounds with /Ʒ/, for instance, Cebuano maayong buntag ("good morning") vocalized as maazong buntag in Porohanon. Other variations contain the Porohanon ara dira instead of the regular Cebuano na-a diha.
Poro Municipality has a total land area of over 6 thousand hectares, of which over 4 thousand is arable, and the rest are used for residential, commercial, disposable land, reservation land, and some national parks or recreation grounds.
Topographically, Poro has over two thousand hectares that are steeply sloping and almost four thousand hectares that are nearly flat to gently sloping.
Poro Municipality is accessible with national, provincial, municipal, and barangay roads. There are domestic ports available since it is an island and accessible from various points.
There public schools that cater to the needs of elementary and secondary levels but no tertiary or college level.
Public markets, public library, multi-purpose building, recreation centers and public facilities are also available.
The most common mode of transportation are the jeepneys, tricycles, trisikads, and motorbikes (and scooters).
There are various shapes and forms of businesses existing in the area. The most common one is the miscellaneous type which is called Sari-Sari Store.
Also, located in the town area or Poblacion, you can find restaurants that are usually established side-by-side with each other selling local dishes.
You can purchase fresh fish or meat at the nearby town’s public market that is usually packed with many sorts of shops and stores. Some are general merchandise, tailoring, pawnshops, service and repair shops, and bakeries, among others.
Raw materials
Poro is non-industrial but basically a fishing town and agricultural.
Aside from sea products, the municipality produces various types of raw materials and farm products including copra, fruits, vegetables, corn, root crops, bamboo, nipa leaves and even livestock and poultry products.
Besides the raw materials and agricultural products, locals use their skills in making mats, furniture, home decors, fashion accessories, etc.
Check out some of them here. I have visited the Buho Rock and should come back someday to explore the remaining places and attractions.
There are various points of entry into this island. The best way, given that you are coming from Cebu City is to take a ferry from Danao Port in Danao City, which is about an hour drive or via public transport.
Here is the link for Danao Port where you can take the ferry. If you are driving any vehicle, boats can ferry your vehicle to Camotes, and you can freely and easily drive all over the Camotes Islands including Poro Municipality.
Thanks for visiting this page. Have a wonderful and safe travel!
