Salay Cave is one of the new and mysterious caves discovered in Alegria Municipality in the southern part of Cebu Province. It is not well-explored yet, and so one can still discover secrets and gems inside it.
Alegria is about two hours by public transport from Cebu City. The municipality is quaint and quiet and has resources for travelers who prefer to explore nature, experience serenity, dip in the sea and river waters, or explore farmlands and forest areas.
Among its best resources, Alegria has its interesting historical background which is considered as one of its greatest treasures. This historical context is backed by evidence including a watchtower (known as 'baluarte'), artifacts from caves, old houses, and a church built over a century ago.
Therefore, if you love both history and outdoor activities, then Alegria could be one on your list of destinations.
Caves are always mysterious, not only because it is usually dark inside but also due to no one can really discover the full size and length, a number of chambers, aside from the creatures among other things that are kept hidden inside them.
Yes, this is also true to Salay Cave. You can be one among the discoverers of this cave’s chamber, pool or other exciting feature inside its belly.
For sure, Salay is proven to be having fantastic living stalactites and stalagmites. They are alive and well because they glow in the pitch dark when you turn on your flashlight. You can experience this, especially in its inner chamber. The stalactites and stalagmites sparkle like diamonds when hit by light – a scene that you can only experience, feel and describe when inside the chamber.
To get into that inner chamber can be a bit exciting and challenging. That is because the aperture leading to that chamber is just tight but enough for a ‘medium size’ human being to get through it. This chamber still holds a number of mysteries as it is not entirely explored and measured yet. Its magnitude is still waiting for experts and conservationists to discover it.
Again, explorers and visitors are reminded not to touch the stalactites and stalagmites because they are susceptible to foreign matters. Anything that is not natural and foreign to them can stop their growth and could eventually kill them. So, make sure that you do not touch them or pour anything over them.
Personally, I always found caves with such features as something out-of-this-world or something alien. It is a different world to me that is why we should be extra careful and be more appreciative and not exploit nor abuse their beauty. Now, if you are interested, let me tell you how to get there, below.
Salay Cave is located close to another cave called Cambusay. However, first, you need to get to Alegria Municipality and start your ‘real’ adventure from there.
From Cebu City, given that you will be commencing your journey from this provincial capital, head to Cebu South Bus Terminal and take a public bus (preferably Ceres Bus line).
Buses depart every 30 minutes, and you have choices between an ordinary (non-aircon and stops every designated area) and an express (air-con bus). It takes over three hours from the terminal to Alegria town.
Get off at the public market area in Alegria and find the parking area for Habal-habal motorcycles. Try dealing with the driver for PHP70.00 to get to this Cave. Also, you can arrange to be brought to other places including Cambusay Cave and Cambais Falls.
Now, if you are getting excited to see the place, plan ahead and simply just do it!
Thanks for reading up to this part. Let us know should you need more details.
Have a great day and safe travels!
