TUBURAN MUNICIPALITY, BEACHES & RESORTS

Tuburan is one of Cebu’s municipalities in the northern part of this province in the central Philippines.

It is approximately 96 kilometers from Cebu City, the provincial capital city.

Tuburan is bounded in the north by Tabuelan Municipality, in the south by Asturias Municipality, in the East by Sogod and Catmon Municipalities, and in the west by Tanon Strait.

Tuburan is a derivative of a Cebuano word ‘spring’, which is quite prevalent in this part of the island. The municipality was established in 1851 by Don Mariano Monteban who was a native of Sogod, another municipality of northern Cebu.

Based on the 2010 census report, Tuburan has over 58 thousand registered residents.
Tuburan is also popular being the hometown of the revolutionary leader Arcadio Maxilom during the Spanish period. In Tuburan Museum, a Maxilom Memorial Library is established in honor of his bravery and leadership.

POPULAR SITES & DESTINATIONS

Aside from its rich and colorful historical facts and events, Tuburan is also popular for its natural environment and famous sites and destinations for leisure, vacation or even for the challenging adventure activities.

In particular, Tuburan Municipality is known for its sparkling springs, and pristine, creeks, rivers, and beaches. Among the popular destinations are the Molobolo Spring, Mantawihan, Little Baguio, the Marmol Cliffs and Cave, Lantawan Lookout, Daan Lungsod and the Apalan white beach resorts.

Out of Tuburan’s total land area (approximately 24 thousand hectares) over 9 thousand hectares are considered as national parks and/or playgrounds.

ECONOMY & RELIGION

Just like most of the province’s municipalities, Tuburan is a farming area but the soil is not as arable as in other parts of the country. Even so, Tuburan locally produces decorative apparels and fashionable accessories made of various local materials including sea and coconut shells, bamboo, rattan, among other indigenous products.

Some of the raw materials available in the area include: corn, coconut, coco, stones, sugarcane, vegetables, guano, limestones, rice, etc.

Being a largely Christian community, Tuburan’s socio-cultural events and activities are almost always intertwined with religious events. A religious festivity in honor of a particular saint as patron of a town (or barangay) is a common expression of Filipinos’ social interaction and religious expression.

INFRASTRUCTURE & UTILITIES

Tuburan Municipality has elementary schools, high schools, a college school, and vocational school that are either public and private entities.

There are public structures established in most populated areas, such as public markets, multi-purpose buildings, recreation centers, public offices, and some libraries.
The mode of transportation basically includes: buses, jeepneys, motorcycles with sidecars, motorbikes (habal-habal), bicyles, and tricycles.

Post offices, telephone stations, telegraphic stations, and phone stores are widely available in most populated areas in the municipality.

Banks and other commercial and financial institutions are available in some select areas.
The most ubiquitous commercial structure in the area, as in most parts of the country, is the so-called ‘sari-sari’ store. This small store but with the basic necessities available, provides easy access among locals who cannot readily visit the city or towns to buy salt or sugar among other daily needs.

Municipalities in the Philippines are subdivided into ‘barangays’ as a method of governing local units. Tuburan, being one of the biggest municipalities in the province has under its authority over 50 barangays.
