Visayas Travel Sites - Amazing White Beaches, National Parks, Old Churches…
Visayas region is the third major island which is composed of many islands. Due to its ‘islandish’ geography, the Visayas region abounds with islands and islets with mostly white sand beaches with green palm trees at the background.
Cluster of Islands
Visayas, an island group in central Philippines consists of seven large and several hundred smaller satellite islands that cluster around Samar and Camotes seas.
The seven main islands include Bohol, Cebu, Leyte, Masbate, Samar, Panay, and Negros.
Historically, when the Visayas Islands was first discovered by the Spanish conquistadores, they called it ‘Islas de los Pintados’ (Islands of the Painted People).
Cebuanos in the past were used to paint their bodies expressing their roles and status in the society. Christianity seems to be the reason for its disappearance, except for the new trend today.
Sources of Livelihood
Most of the Visayas islands have large western plains, except for the mountainous or hilly Samar and Masbate islands. Negros and Panay have extensive eastern plains where large track of lands are being tilled for growing sugarcane, rice and corn.
These expansive tracks of lands are called ‘haciendas’, remnants of the Spanish era system still existing even today.
Since the Visayas region is surrounded by bodies of seawaters, most Bisayan people go out to fish for their daily consumption or as source of income. They either dry their catch under the hot tropical sun and sell later on or just sell their fresh catch directly to the markets.
Major Regions
There are three major regions in the
Visayas area: Western, Central, and Eastern Visayas. Western Visayas has
Iloilo City as its regional center and composed and local government
units (LGUs), which are: Aklan, Antique, Bacolod, Capiz, Guimaras,
Iloilo, Iloilo City, and Negros Occidental.
Cebu City is the
regional center of Central Visayas region. It is composed of Bohol,
Cebu, Cebu City, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor as LGUs.
Eastern
Visayas region has Tacloban as its regional center and is composed of
Biliran, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Northern Samar, Ormoc City, Samar,
Southern Leyte, and Tacloban as its local government units.
